Russia's ambassador to Ankara has been shot and killed in a gun attack in the Turkish capital, Russia's foreign ministry said.
Andrey Karlov was several minutes into a speech at a photo exhibition when he was shot in the back multiple times on Monday evening, Turkish media said.
Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova made the announcement in a live televised statement.
The attacker let the guests out of the exhibition venue after he shot the diplomat, according to local media reports. Several media outlets reported that a gun fight ensued after Karlov was shot.
Local broadcaster NTV television said at least three people were wounded and were taken to the hospital.
A witness talking to Turkey's CNNTurk television said that the attacker was acting alone.
"He (the attacker) said that I will not leave this place alive," according to the witness.
